South Dakota License Plates

New! Effective July 1, 2011, license fees will be changing for noncommercial passenger vehicles and trucks, noncommercial gross weight registered vehicles, motorcycles, trailers and motor homes. In addition to a rate increase, the fee reduction currently applied when a vehicle is 5 years old will change to a vehicle that is 10 years old. To view the new fees, please click on the links below. Commercial license fees are not changing however, effective July 1, 2011, the fee reduction currently applied when a vehicle is 5 years old will change to a vehicle that is 10 years old for commercially licensed vehicles.

Upon sale or transfer of a vehicle the plates shall remain with the owner and may be transferred to another like vehicle, upon approval by the department.

Plate with owner will apply to commercial vehicles (which will be renewed under our staggered registration renewal system) and noncommercial vehicles, trailers, motorcycles and historical plated vehicles. It will not apply to boats, snowmobiles, trailer ID plated vehicles, construction plates or prorate (IRP/apportioned) vehicles.
