How do I file my return online?
You must apply for authorization to use the SD Quest system. Upon receipt and approval of your SD Quest application, we will assign an ID number. We will send you an e-mail with the ID and PIN. If you did not supply an e-mail address, we will send the documents to you via regular mail.

What is an ID and PIN?
Security - To guard your privacy, we identify your business in the SD Quest system by ID and PIN only. At no time during the process will we request or display your actual business name or bank account numbers.
The ID is an 8-digit number assigned by the SD Department of Revenue. The PIN is a 6-digit number selected by you. You use those two numbers to sign into the SD Quest system and submit your return.

Forgot your ID and PIN?
You can get the two numbers by calling the SD Quest section at 1-800-829-9188 or sending an e-mail to SDQuest@state.sd.us . You will need to provide your Business Tax License Number, Federal Identification Number or Social Security Number associated with the business.
When can I file my return?
SD Quest is available 24 hours a day/7 days a week, from the 1st of the month to 11:59 pm (CT) of the due date. However, you must file a return in the month it is due. We accept only current returns online. All late returns must be filed using a paper form. The SD Quest system will be shut down from the day after the due date until the 1st of the next month.

When is my return due?
Returns must be filed online on or before the 23rd of the month following the end of the period. If the 23rd is a Saturday, Sunday, or a legal holiday, the return is due the next working day. For example, the September 2011 return is due October 23, 2011, which is a Sunday; therefore, the return must be filed by 11:59 pm (CT) on Monday, October 24, 2011.
Returns cannot be filed electronically after 11:59 pm (CT) of the due date.
The Deadlines Calendar has due dates for each month.
Can I prepare my return without submitting it?
Yes. You have the ability to "save and exit" a return without submitting it. This allows a return to be completed, corrected or approved at a later date. The return must still be "submitted" prior to 11:59 pm (CT) on the due date. Returns not submitted will be deleted after the due date.

How do I know I submitted a return?
SD Quest assigns a Confirmation Number to each return submitted. When you have completed your tax return, calculated the tax due, and reviewed the completed product, you will re-enter your PIN. After confirming that number, your screen will display a copy of the information submitted with a confirmation number at the top of the form. Please print and retain this form in your records.
If you clicked "save and exit," this did NOT submit the return to the Department. You must access the SD Quest system again and "submit" the return to complete the process. After the deadline for filing returns has passed, we delete all "saved" returns not "submitted." You will not be able to access that information and will have to file the return via paper with a check for the tax due.

How do I pay my taxes electronically?
The Department accepts ACH Debit and ACH Credit payments. You must select one of these two methods on the SD Quest application. You should check with your bank to see if authorization is required for either of these methods.
ACH Debit - Under this method you authorize the Department of Revenue to automatically transfer the tax payment from your bank account to the Department's bank.
If you select this method on the application, you must provide the following information to the Department: The business name on the bank account, what type of account it is (savings or checking), the bank account number, and the bank's routing transit number.
Once you submit a tax return and identify the "amount remitted," the Department will arrange for the transfer of the "amount remitted" on the second-to-last working day of the month.
ACH Credit - Under this method, you initiate payment through your bank to the Department of Revenue's bank account. You must notify your bank to make the necessary arrangements for the payment transfer each filing period in time to ensure payments will be received by the Department's bank on or before the second-to-last working day of the month.
You are also responsible for any costs associated with this kind of payment.
Transfers must be made in the NACHA CCD+ format using the TXP Convention.

When is my electronic payment due?
Payments are due the second to the last working day of the filing month. The Department must receive the payment on or before the second-to-last working day in September.
For example, the electronic filing of the August, 2011 return must be done by 11:59 pm (CT) on September 23, 2011. Under the ACH Debt method, the Department will transfer the money on September 29, 2011. Under the ACH Credit method, you must send the Department payment on or before September 29, 2011.
How do I pay taxes in multiple cities in South Dakota?
SD Quest supports multiple options for reporting city taxes. The system automatically displays 14 city codes used on the previous months' return. You can also use our "file attach upload" feature to import a file rather than manually entering each municipal code and taxable amount. A description of this program is available in the user's guide found in the SD Quest Forms section. An Excel form for using this program is available under Forms on the SD Quest page.
How do I use a credit when filing on SD Quest?
To use a credit when filing on SD Quest, enter your return information and calculate. Because there is no line to enter the credit, you will need to calculate the balance due. If the credit is less than the Total Due, subtract the credit from the Total Due and enter the difference in the "Amount Remitted" line. This is the amount you owe. If the credit is more than the Total Due, enter a "0" in the "Amount Remitted" line.
