RENEWAL
INSTRUCTIONS INDIVIDUALS

A license expires two years after the date of
issuance and becomes invalid on that date unless renewed by that
date. Any professional engineer, architect, land surveyor,
landscape architect, or petroleum release assessor or remediator
licensed who desires to continue to practice or offer to practice
the licensee's profession shall:
(1) Complete the renewal notice form and pay the renewal fee;
and
(2) Successfully complete all continuing professional
development requirements established by the board; and
(3) Complete the South Dakota Professional
Development Hours Log OR submit a log/form showing that you have
met the continuing education requirements of your state of
residency; and
(4) Indicate the business/company that they
work for.
The renewal notice is sent to the last known
address of the licensee at least one month in advance of the date
of expiration of the license. A licensee shall notify the board of
any address changes.
The board may decline to renew a license if an
applicant has not completed continuing professional development
requirements. A license for a two-year period shall be issued upon
completion of the requirements.
CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HOURS (PDH)
QUALIFYING ACTIVITIES –
Any
licensed person must obtain 30 PDH during the two years preceding
renewal to meet the continuing professional development
requirements as a condition for license renewal. At least 20 PDH
must be in technical subjects that directly safeguard the public’s
life, health, safety, and welfare. The board may accept a maximum
of 10 PDH in professional management subjects such as total
quality process, computer courses, or ethics. You can find more information

COMITY/OUT-OF-JURISDICTION RESIDENT CONTINUING
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HOURS (PDH) - Any licensed person
shall certify to being licensed in and to meeting the continuing
education requirements of his or her state of residency which must
include mandatory continuing education requirements. The
licensee must have met the requirements in the other state within
13 months immediately preceding renewal in this state.
CARRYOVERS - Up to 15 hours above the 30
hours required for a biennium may be credited toward the
requirements for the next biennium.
PDH LOG – You MUST
submit a South Dakota Professional Development Hours (PDH) log at
the time of renewal. Out-of-jurisdiction residents MUST
submit a log/form showing that you have met the continuing
education requirements of your state of residency.
All activities must be
relevant to your practice. DO NOT send documentation of
these activities. Documentation will be requested if you are
selected for an audit.
AUDITS OF PDH –
Audits will be made by the Board
periodically after renewals are submitted to ensure compliance
with requirements. If your name is selected for audit, you will be
contacted. Each licensee selected for audit shall respond with
detailed information and documentation about the PDH activities
claimed. Failure to respond within 45 days of an audit
notification may result in disciplinary action. Falsification of
documentation is grounds for disciplinary action. All records of
attendance and completion of PDH credits should be maintained for
three years for audit purposes.
RENEWAL NOTICE FORM -
Your name, address, alternate address,
phone numbers and email address are printed on the renewal form.
Please make any corrections or additions to this form.
You will receive a wall certificate with the
new 2-year expiration date and a receipt for the renewal fee. As
public information, your name, profession, license number, mailing
address and work phone number will be available in the Roster
located at our Internet site.
ACTIVE STATUS - $80.00
You have met South Dakota’s continuing
professional development requirements of 30 PDH's during the
previous two years.
ACTIVE STATUS - $80.00
You are a resident of another state
other than South Dakota and shall certify to being licensed in and
to meeting the continuing education requirements of his or her
state of residency which must include mandatory continuing
education requirements. The licensee must have met the
requirements in the other state within 13 months immediately
preceding renewal in this state.
INACTIVE STATUS - $40.00
Any licensed person may request that
the person's license be placed on inactive status.
You may not practice, offer to
practice, or use any title to imply licensure. You are exempt from
the continuing education requirements. Your records will be
maintained for two years. You will receive a renewal notice in two
years to continue inactive status.
REACTIVATE FROM INACTIVE STATUS - $80.00
If you wish to reactivate from
inactive status you will be required to: Complete a reactivation
application; pay the reactivation fee of $80 (this is in addition
to the $40 already paid for inactive status); complete the
open-book take home exam over South Dakota state laws, and
complete a business application if the business is not currently
active with our office.
RETIRED STATUS - $10.00
Any licensed person may request that
the person's license be placed on retired status.
You may not practice, offer to
practice, or use any title to imply licensure. You are exempt from
the continuing education requirements. Your records will be
maintained for two years. You will receive a renewal notice in two
years to continue retired status. You must also meet the following
criteria: Have not at any time had a professional license revoked
in any state; has been licensed in South Dakota for 10 consecutive
years.
EXEMPTION FROM PDH STATUS - $80.00
Any licensed person may qualify for
PDH exemption based on the following criteria: temporary active
duty in U.S. Military Service; and those who have experienced a
serious illness. You will be required to send supporting
documentation.
DISCIPLINED –
If you have been disciplined in
another state/jurisdiction you will be required to submit
documentation.
REINSTATE A LAPSED LICENSE - $180.00 If you
wish to reinstate a lapsed license within three years after your
license date of expiration you will be required to: Complete a
reinstatement application; pay the reinstatement fee of $180 (this
is $80 for the renewal & $100 late penalty fee); complete 30 hours
of continuing education during the previous two (2 years from the
date of the reinstatement; complete a PDH log, complete the
open-book take home exam over South Dakota state laws, and
complete a business application if the business is not currently
active with our office. If a person fails to reinstate an expired
license within the three years after the date of expiration, all
relevant files shall be destroyed. A person requesting licensure
after three years shall submit an application for a new license.
This person shall retain their original license number.
