Teen Citizens & Consumers: Consumer Fraud Fact Card

Now more than ever, consumers need to educate themselves in ways to avoid being scammed by con artists and dishonest businesses.

This card contains information that consumers can use to be armed -- and to beware -- of common consumer scams.

Don't rush into making purchases or investment decisions. Take your time;

Always carefully read through contract;

Resist high pressure sales tactics. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is;

Beware of unsolicited phone offers -- don't be afraid to hang up on telemarketers that are rude or pushy;

Use care when giving out personal information such as bank account or Social Security numbers; never give that information to people you don't know;

Get written estimates;

Ask about refund policies and warranties before you buy;

Prepare a list of questions in advance when considering a major purchase;

Call the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division (1-800-300-1986) to find out about a firm's track record.
